Frequently Asked Questions
CUSTOM HOMES & BUILDS
Q1: What types of custom homes does Adirondack Customs build?
We build custom log homes, timber-frame homes, and high-performance stick-built custom homes. As a preferred builder for multiple manufacturers, we bring a level of craftsmanship and accountability to every project that off-the-shelf builders simply can’t match. Whether you’re dreaming of a classic Adirondack log retreat or a modern high-performance home, we build it to last — and built the way you want it.
Q2: What is a “preferred builder” and why does it matter to me?
Being a preferred builder means our manufacturers have vetted and endorsed us as one of their trusted construction partners. For you, that means faster access to materials, stronger warranties, and a builder who knows the product inside and out. It’s not a title we purchased — it’s a relationship we earned.
Q3: What’s the difference between a log home and a timber-frame home?
A log home uses full logs as the primary structural and aesthetic element — the logs ARE the walls. A timber-frame home uses a heavy post-and-beam skeleton with infill panels, giving you the dramatic exposed wood look on the interior with more flexibility in exterior finish options. Both draw from our Amish craftsman-influenced techniques and are built to perform in Adirondack conditions.
Q4: How long does it take to build a custom home?
Custom homes require custom timeframes — no two projects are the same. For a typical single-family home in the 1,500–3,000 square foot range, expect 12–24 months from conception to completion. That includes design, permitting, and construction. For homes with shovel-ready plans, actual on-site construction typically runs 9–18 months depending on complexity, site conditions, and scope. We walk every client through a detailed project timeline before breaking ground so there are no surprises.
Q5: Do you handle permits, site prep, and inspections?
Yes — we manage the full process so you don’t have to. Our team provides in-house design work and engineer stamping for site work, stormwater management, septic systems, site use, and construction drawings. We handle all agency permitting and filings including the Adirondack Park Agency (APA), Army Corps of Engineers, and county and town-level construction permits and inspections. From the first filing to the final sign-off, we’ve got it covered.
Q6: Can you build on my existing lot?
Absolutely. We work with existing lots and can help evaluate site suitability, access, drainage, and utility considerations before the project begins. If you don’t have land yet, we can help point you in the right direction.
Q7: What is a high-performance custom home?
A high-performance home is a stick-built custom home engineered for superior energy efficiency, comfort, and durability. Think better insulation, tighter building envelopes, advanced HVAC systems, and materials chosen for long-term performance — not just upfront cost. You pay a little more to build it right; you save significantly over time.
Q8: Do you work with architects and designers, or do you handle that in-house?
We do both. Our in-house designer Ken is creative and highly skilled at turning your concept into a fully executed design — his work is beautiful and built to build. If you already have plans from your own architect, designer, or engineer, we work seamlessly with outside professionals to bring your pre-set design to life. Either way, you get a home that’s designed right and built right.
Q9: How much does a custom log home cost?
Custom home pricing depends on size, style, materials, site conditions, and finishes. We don’t believe in ballpark numbers that set wrong expectations — we believe in honest conversations. Contact us for a consultation and we’ll give you a real picture of what your project will involve.
Q10: How do I get started with Adirondack Customs?
The best first step is a conversation. Call us at (518) 586-2469 or reach out through our website. We’ll learn about your vision, walk you through our process, and give you an honest assessment of timeline, scope, and cost.
RENOVATIONS, ADDITIONS & SPECIALTY WORK
Q11: What types of renovations do you specialize in?
We specialize in high-quality custom renovations including kitchens, master suites, bathrooms, and full interior overhauls. We bring the same craftsmanship to renovations that we bring to new builds — because your home deserves it.
Q12: What’s the difference between a renovation and an addition?
A renovation updates or transforms existing space. An addition creates new square footage — whether that’s a new room, an expanded kitchen, a garage, or a full second-story addition. Many projects combine both. We handle the full scope either way.
Q13: Do you take on smaller projects or only full builds?
We take on projects that demand our quality-first mentality — regardless of size. We’re more about the relationship than the project scope, and we do what our clients want. That said, our level of craftsmanship and detail typically aligns with a minimum project investment of around $50K for smaller jobs, $150K for remodels, $250K for additions, and $500K+ for custom homes. If you’re looking for a builder who treats your project like it’s the only one that matters, let’s talk.
Q14: How long do kitchen and master suite renovations take?
The kitchen — where everyone gathers and feels like family. The master suite — where you go to get away from it all. Both deserve to be done right. Most clients spend 4–6 months in the planning and design phase for these types of renovations. Kitchen construction typically runs 1.5–5 months depending on complexity, layout changes, and finishes. Master suites range from 2–6 months. We’ll give you an honest timeline up front so you can plan around your life while we build around your vision.
DECKS, PORCHES & OUTDOOR LIVING
Q15: What deck and porch options do you offer?
We design and build custom decks, covered porches, wrap-arounds, screened-in porches, and outdoor living spaces built to handle Adirondack winters and look great doing it. Materials, size, and style are all tailored to your home and your vision.
Q16: Do you build year-round or only in warmer months?
We run our teams year-round. Weather can affect progress on exterior work — this is the Adirondacks, after all — but we plan for it. Interior renovations, framing under cover, and project planning keep moving regardless of the season. Your project doesn’t stop because the calendar says December.
LANDSCAPING & HARDSCAPING
Q17: What residential landscaping services do you offer?
We offer the full catalog of seasonal landscaping services. From spring cleanups, pruning, mulching, pre-emergent weed control, and plantings through repetitive maintenance contracts — cutting, trimming, edging, and blowing — to thatching, aeration, seeding, fertilizing, fall cleanups, and winter prep. Our certified experts keep your property looking its best from the first thaw to the last leaf.
Q18: Do you do hardscaping like patios and retaining walls?
Absolutely — and then some. Our hardscape design and install team can transform your property into the jewel of the neighborhood. Our designer uses CAD to show you exactly what the transformation will look like before a single stone is placed. Ponds, waterfalls, outdoor kitchens, patios, retaining walls, flower beds, beaches, sitting areas, gardens, and more. If you can dream it, we can design it and build it.
ROLLOFF SERVICES
Q19: What dumpster sizes do you offer?
We offer 10, 15, and 20-yard containers to match your project:
10-yard — Great for small renovations, cleanouts, and contained projects
15-yard — Perfect for weekend spring property overhauls and mid-size jobs
20-yard — Built for demo projects, larger-scale renovations, and heavy cleanouts
Q20: Can I rent a rolloff for a personal home project?
